Mission:
Mission 1 - Klingons on Starboard Bow
Location: Klingon Neutral Zone
Timeline: 2261.190 0030
Lieutenant Haas was sat at his station monitoring the comms channel when his ear picked something up. “Captain, I’m picking up a message directed to a Klingon Battle Cruiser in the area. They’re being ordered to our location.” Haas reported.
Cindy had been expecting just this. However, before hailing them, she wanted more information. "Zoe, where's our Romulan 'friend,' now? Are we within firing range yet?"
"If nothing changes, we'll be within range in ten minutes," Zoe said. "No change ... wait, the Romulan is changing direction. My guess, they're headed straight for that battle cruiser."
"Lovely!" said Cindy sarcastically. She had an idea of what was going to happen next and she worried that it was not pretty.
"Neza, anything strange out here that we need to be aware of?"
Re-checking again, Neza shook her head. "I'm not even seeing any Battle Cruisers, at least not on long range sensors. If they are about, they aren't close enough for sensors to pick it up."
"Check those sensors again. Zoe said they were heading for one. Do we have a malfunction?"
Rubbing the back of her neck, Neza re-checked everything. Finally, a blip. “There they are, just on the edge of the sensors. But, the Romulans are headed right for them. Whether or not the Klingons know they are there is another question.”
"Keep an eye on them. I want to know what they're doing if they make any move whatsoever."
“The moment they do anything at all, you’ll know.”
Cindy gave her thanks before turning to her executive officer, and asking, "Bec, any last words of wisdom?"
"Not really, Cindy," Bec shook her head. "I just hope those ships aren't in collusion."
"Collusion? Do you really think that Romulans and Klingons would work together? To what end?" Cindy wondered aloud to Bec.
"Currently? To destroy us," Bec said with a shrug. "Maybe it's my security training and my past talking, but neither race has been fond of the Federation or Humans. I could see them working together to bring us down so they may rule the galaxy."
Cindy considered that but it did not sit right. "But why not amass a joint attack, then, rather than engage some starbases and a single starship. Something doesn't fit."
"Maybe they're testing a new weapon? Or this 'cloak' device?" Bec offered.
"Maybe," Cindy conceded. "But they would not need the Klingons for that."
"True," Bec shook her head. "Or maybe they're just hoping the Klingons will destroy us for them while they charge up their weapon again...."
"And take us both out, thus starting a war?" Cindy wondered aloud.
Turning back to Haas, she said, "Open me a channel to the Klingons."
“Of course, Captain.” Haas replied as he opened the comms channel. “Perhaps we should invite them for dinner too.”
"That might not be a bad idea. Open up greater diplomatic relations!" Cindy replied excitedly. "Of course," she continued a little disappointed, "that would not allow us much time for exploration and that's really our mission and my passion."
Haas looked at Jackson wide eyed, “You really want me to ask them, Captain?”
"Perhaps after we sort this enigma out," Cindy replied thinking this all through. She called to the Klingons and said, "Klingon vessel, this is Captain Cynthia Jackson of the USS Legacy, were you in receipt of the message regarding the Romulan vessel that we sent before we entered the neutral zone?"
”Duj DIvI', QIn Hev maH 'ach romuluSngan Duj yab pagh legh. laH neH maH 'ejyo' toj ghotvam'e'. ghaH'e' SoHbe'chugh veS DaHjaj nab SoH.”
“Bear with me. Let me run this through the universal translator for you.” Haas said as he worked. “There you go, ma’am.”
’Federation vessel, we received your message but see no evidence of this Romulan ship. We can only assume this is a Starfleet trick. Reverse your course unless you plan to start a war today.’
Looking back over at Cindy, Neza didn’t like the sound of that. “Do you want me to send them what we are following to see if they can track it as well, Cindy?”
"Yes, give them the approximate coordinates of the Romulan ship and tell them how to track them." Cindy looked over at Bec. Cindy's eyes were now a deep hazel.
“Sending,” Neza stated as she sent the information over to the Klingons. She made sure to send it through the translator so they could actually understand it.
”pagh Dapvetlh, DIvI' chenmoH, nuq SoH ngeH.” Barked the Klingon in response. Haas taped away at his console. ’What you sent makes no sense, federation!’
Haas muted the channel, “They don’t seem to be the smartest Klingons in the galaxy do they.” He commented, rolling his eyes before opening the channel again.
Neza rubbed the back of her neck, "I can try to simplify it, but that wouldn't help them too much if we lose the information that would help them figure out what we are talking about."
Cindy's eyes grew darker. This situation was getting ugly fast and she knew it. "Where are the Romulans positioned relative to us, now? Are they in firing distance of us or the Klingons?
"With that weapon? Either one of us. If it were standard weapons like ours? Just outside range of us but another minute in range of the Klingons based on the positioning I see." Neza reran the scans just to be sure, but nodded back to Cindy that the information was correct.
"Let's get in our weapon range, then." She turned to Steffan, "Anything more from the Klingons?"
Haas listened intently to his ear piece for a few moments. “Nothing, Captain. They’ve gone quiet.”
"That doesn't sound good, does it, Bec? Analysis?"
"It's never a good thing when Klingons go quiet. All we can hope is that they managed to engage their brains and use the information we sent them," Bec sighed and shook her head. "Or they're waiting for us to be within their firing range..."
"And we need to get within range of the Romulans." She sighed, her eyes becoming a light brown.
"Engineering, I need all the power that you got. We're going to be taking on Romulans and maybe Klingons."
Gente could not believe what he was hearing, engaging the Romulans and the Klingons. This was not wise. First week on the new job was certainty interesting. "Yes Captain. I'll give you all the power we got, good luck up there." Gente called out, hoping Captain Jackson and the bridge crew could either talk down both races, or end up on the winning side.
Cindy then called out on the comm, "Red alert! Battle stations everyone." Then, to the medical bay, she directed a private comm to Jane, "Prepare for potential casualties. I want to try and keep your job boring but I can make no promises, Jane."
Down in sickbay, Jane once again swore under her breath and approached a comm terminal. =^= “Acknowledged, Cindy. Be advised that our current casualty count is forty-one, sixteen serious, but no fatalities. Sickbay is ready for more and there are trauma nurses and medics throughout the ship.” =^=
=^= IF you have any Klingon and Romulan tranquilizers to beam over to their ships, I am sure that we could avoid much of this, =^= Cindy called back with wry humor. =^= I'll do what I can. =^=
=^= Captain, =^= Jane said into her comm, a bit exasperated. =^= I know that sounded like a good idea in your head, and might’ve been a joke, but what you suggested is that we use a chemical weapon against our enemy, which is immoral and highly illegal. I won’t be party to it. =^= Without waiting for a reply, she cut off the comm channel and went to help T’Kal assemble trauma kits.
Cindy shook her head. She did not have time to have this kind of discussion with her doctor, regardless of whether she was serious or not. In a few moments, they could all die and her primary directive was to keep Legacy safe. After this was done, they would talk.
"Steffan, tell the Klingons to fire where we fire. They will see the Romulan ship."
Lieutenant Haas nodded before speaking in Klingon into his speaker to send the message to the Klingons. He waited a few moments but heard nothing back. “I’m not sure if they’re willing to believe us.” He commented.
"Bec, light up those Romulans."
Neza transferred to exactly location of the Romulans over to Bec, "That's where they're hiding," she said, looking over her shoulder towards Bec.
"My pleasure," Bec called over her shoulder to Cindy from the tactical station. "Thanks Glenn," she said with a smirk at the other woman when the coordinates came through. She set her target with a practiced motion. "Charging weapons... aaaand... firing!"
The space around the Romulan ship started to light up, every once in awhile, showing a glimmer of some metal in the area. Would it be enough for the Klingons to believe them?
"Steffan, do they see it now? Bec, tell me the Klingons are charging weapons or firing at it!"
“I’m not hearing anything from them, Captain.” Haas reporter. “Maybe their not willing to show their hand until the Romulan show theirs?”
"I don't see anything from their weapons," Bec reported chewing her lip. "Wait... something's happening! The Klingons are powering up... can't tell where they're locking on though!"
"Just keep those shields up, Bec! And whatever you do, don't fire on the Klingons. Fire on the Romulans as best as you can!" Turning to Steffan, she asked, "Anything from the Klingons? Can you hear any chatter whatsoever?"
Haas took his ear piece out and shook his head, “Nothing, Captain. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re seeing what the Romulan’s do before they take action.”
Without further ado, the Romulan vessel decloaked. It fired phasers on the Klingon vessel and then on Legacy before cloaking again. Legacy scanners could follow its trail and noticed that it was moving towards Legacy.
Grabbing her console when they were fired at, Neza checked the sensors once she could. "I've got the trail again, they're coming back towards us!"
"Looks like they're trying to get the Klingons to accidentally fire upon us," Bec said as she reset herself in her seat and worked to maintain shields and line up another volley. "It's hard to aim at them and not the Klingons," she muttered. Finally getting the trajectory right for not hitting the Klingon ship, Bec fired all weapons. "Another volley headed to kiss the Romulan ship..."
Eyes going wide, Neza’s head snapped over, “Cindy! I’ve got an energy surge coming from the Romulans! Matches that of the previous times they fired!”
"Engineering to the bridge, López here Captain. Ma'am Lieutenant Avonavi wanted me to inform you, that our shields can not with stand the kenetic or energetic properties of that plasma ball, recommend we jump to warp and try to out run it." Gente said , trying to remain calm and collected.
Cindy commanded urgently, "Steffan! Warn the Klingons!" She then turned to Bec, "Fire everything we have! We can't outrun the next blast if they're coming at us! Take that ship out of the Klingon sky!"
“Captain! Message from the Klingons! They’re moving to engage the Romulans!” Haas called out from the Comms console.
"With pleasure!" Bec grinned as she sent volley after volley toward the Romulan ship. Alone, it would take ages to take down this ship, but with the Klingon's help? It would take minutes, if that, to disable them. Knowing how the Klingons usually reacted though, she assumed the ship would be completely destroyed. But she did hope that there was enough left that they could study that weapon.
The Romulan ship rematerialized and fired its plasma weapon at the Klingon ship from near where the Legacy sat while both the Legacy and Klingon vessel fired. Cindy screamed, "Tell them to get out of here, Steffan! They'll be destroyed!"
“tlhIngan Duj, tlhap bIjun” Steffan said down the open comm channel to the Klingon vessel.
Having been fired upon by Legacy and the Klingon ship, the Romulan ship was evidently in tatters. It hailed Legacy and Cindy told Steffan to put it on screen. A burning and wrecked bridge appeared behind the Romulan woman who was bleeding green blood from her arms and face. Burns were also evident. "I do not know who you are. But I had to make sure that I saw the face of the being that bested me before I killed us both."
Neza spun to look at the viewscreen and hearing what was said, quickly turned to run a scan of the Romulan ship. She did not like the sounds of what was being said. Not only that, she heard what Engineering said and did not like that thought either. It didn’t take long for her to realize what was going on.
“They’ve initiated their self destruct sequence! They can’t fire that plasma weapon anymore, but if they go up...they’ll take us with them!”
There was a sudden thud on Legacy. Cindy knew exactly what had happened. "Crap! Either that's a grapple or a tractor beam! Bec, break it and warp out immediately." There was no time to think about what may have happened to the Klingon ship. She hoped that it made it.
"Working," Bec called out, her hands flying furiously over her console as she worked to break the beam. Finally, she felt them break free and grinned. "Warping out..... now!" Bec said as she hit pushed the 'throttle' to max, getting them out of the vicinity as quickly as she could.
Legacy went into warp and just as it did so, the viewscreen showed an explosion commencing where the Romulan ship once was. The Klingon ship could not be seen. "Do you have us going back to our side of the Klingon Neutral Zone, Bec?"
"No, Cindy, I have us going deeper into Klingon territory," Bec said sarcastically, throwing her a grin over her shoulder. "Yes, we're headed back to Federation space," she said for the benefit of those who may not realize she was being sarcastic.
Cindy laughed. "Darn it, Bec! And here I was hoping to take a personal visit to Qo'nos! Wouldn't that be the sight?" Cindy threw back her hair and said, "Well, if we're heading back into Federation space, I suppose I should just turn over the bridge to you and get some rest after writing preliminary reports. Try not to find us anymore Romulans, OK?"
Neza smirked and kept an eye on the scanners but finally was starting to feel exhausted. “Yes, no more Romulans...”
=^=Sickbay to Bridge,=^= came Jane’s voice from the comm system. =^=If the crisis is over and he’s no longer her needed, could you kindly tell Mr. Kennett that if he’s not in sickbay in the next five minutes, I’ll be coming up there with rope and an anti-grav unit?=^=
Grumbling from an engineering console on the bridge, Ayden tapped the comm that was on it, =^=I’ll be down there soon, doctor. No need to send anyone. Can’t say it’ll be five minutes, but it’ll be soon.=^= Glancing around, Ayden knew he couldn't get away with saying he couldn't leave yet. =^= On second thought, give me ten, Doctor. =^= He had to wait for his replacement after all.
=^=Acknowledged. Ten minutes. Sickbay out=^= Jane closed the comm channel.
Bec stifled a yawn and nodded. "You ruin all my fun, Cindy," she said handing over the helm and tactical to a couple of fresh faced Ensigns that were on night shift. She stretched and walked over to the command chair, standing a few feet in front of Cindy. "I'll take the bridge, for now..." she smirked.
Keeping in a laugh at Bec’s comment, Neza started to gather everything so that the night shift person could take over whenever they got there. She was beat, and didn’t want to look at things anymore today.
"Just don't take it anywhere I wouldn't," Cindy quipped in return.
"That's not many places," Bec shot back with a laugh. "I'll try not to do too many donuts either..." She grinned devilishly.
"If you're going to do donuts, I prefer mine with cinnamon, sugar and sprinkles," she teased back. "Sweet, just like me."
"I'll keep that in mind. Now, don't make me call in the Doc to have you relieved of duty," Bec smirked. "Off you go, get some sleep."
"Yes, ma'am!" Cindy said with a smart salute. "I stand relieved!" With that, Cindy left the bridge and headed for some well deserved rest.
