669 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Mission 1 - Klingons on Starboard Bow
Location: Chief Science Officer's Office
Timeline: 2261.187 1200

Neza had looked over her schedule, seeing a lot of bridge shifts. "What's he putting me on the bridge for," she whispered to herself as she fixed her hair and headed down the corridor. If she was going to be on bridge shifts, she was going to ask if she could run some extra scans as they kept traveling. It would give her something to do at the secondary bridge science console anyways, right?

She found her destination, and knew he would be in here. Pressing the chime on the door, she waited.

Alastair sat, looking at this and that while also signing off on certain things that required his attention. Tedious? Very. But he knew it as a necessary tedium. Getting his signature on the last report that had crossed his desk, he heard the chime of someone at the door. He sighed, organizing things before continuing.

"Enter."

Hearing the voice on the other side of the door, Neza let the door open and stepped inside. She knew to keep her cool, especially considering who she was in the room with. "Lieutenant, I had a request to go along with all of the bridge shifts you've got me setup on. I thought it best to ask before just doing something."

Alastair leaned back in his seat, hands before him with only his fingers touching while looking at Neza. Hopefully their present interaction went better than their initial one, though that wouldn't be too difficult to achieve.

"Very wise, but what is it that you're requesting?"

"I was wondering if I could run some extra scans while I'm on my later shifts. Work on the maybe running some scans for plasma energy for studying. We're a new ship, better to test them out." She was surprised that he...complimented...her. Perhaps in a way. He did say she was very wise for bring it to him.

He pondered for a moment, gently rocking his chair while only slightly drumming his fingers against each other.

"That would be acceptable, just ensure that your scans are executed properly and the results are well documented as per department policy."

"I wouldn't dream of anything else, sir." The words felt odd coming out of her mouth, as she was still being overly polite. "I figure it would also give us a chance to see how well we can stretch the sensors."

The science chief made a note about her request, that it was granted and the stardate just in case anyone came asking. He used just the one hand as he absentmindedly rolled a large coin over the top of his fingers via his knuckles as he did so. He turned his attention back to her, but didn't stop rolling the coin over his hand as he did so.

"There, your request has been documented and signed off on. I trust you will act with the utmost professionalism and not make me regret my decision."

"You won't regret it, Lieutenant. I'll be sure to report everything in as it should be reported in. Thank you, for approving this."

He sat the coin down on his desk with a heavy clink before returning his hands to a steeple position.

"Don't thank me with words Ensign, thank me with results."

Neza nodded. "I will. Am I dismissed, sir?" She was still keeping things calm, though her eye did glance to the coin for a moment.

His eyes saw hers wander down to the coin he had placed on his desk.

"It's a noble. This one was made back home in England in the mid 14th Century. Second coinage of Edward the Third."

He fiddled with it a bit.

"Anyway, if that's all, you're dismissed."

Neza smiled slightly at the coin, she’d heard of what he was talking about, though likely not in as much detail as he knew it. “Thank you, Lieutenant.” She turned and left, surprised that they had a decent conversation, and he was actually willing to give information about the coin.
