The Ordered Check Up

1,105 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Mission 3 - Coming Full Circle
Location: Sickbay

Arras was seated at his desk in his office. He had been seeing patients all day. They all seemed to have the same problem...dizziness, nausea and hallucinations. Complaining of seeing people who had long been either killed or transferred.

All the patients checked out somewhat fine, except for an increase in adrenaline levels.

He heard the door open and looked up.

It was someone in a command uniform.

"Can I help you?" asked Arras.

The six foot tall Captain strolled into the sickbay. Her legs were noticeable first as she entered. The ended in a gold uniformed mini skirt that barely covered her rear, hinting at what might be beneath it. Her platinum blonde hair swayed with her as she moved with confidence. "Jane?" she asked. "My Chief Medical Officer.... Wait. No. Sorry." She shook her head. "Joshua! Sorry. All these other people that I seem to remember have been here. I would swear that I spent the night with her last night, too. Jane that is.... She got herself into another sexual mess." Cindy laughed. "Wait! No! You're my Chief Medical Officer. What am I saying?"

She shook her head. "Anyways, Josh, Eli sent me down here to check me out. I suspect that I'm fine. I'm experiencing the same things as the crew but I need to make sure. I have to be able to make command decisions if necessary."

Arras was torn between shock and awe. The captain was a beautiful woman, but was she somehow unable to stay in command? Josh was probably going to somehow screw this up big time. "Of course, captain. Please come with me." He led her to a biobed. He patted the bed. "If you would lay down, I will take a look at you."

"Thank you, Josh," Cindy replied complying with his request. "Very sweet of you. Like I said, I don't think that there is anything wrong with me - anything more than the rest of the crew. Kind of like when Vivyra was here and had so many accidentally affected by her pheromones, though it did a real number on Jane. Or was that me?" She sighed. "See what I mean? You're definitely not a blue haired woman," she told Josh laughing.

"Yes captain, I am definitely not a blue haired woman." Once she was in position, Arras activated the scan. "Just lay still, and try to breath normally." He started watching the readouts. "You're not the first person to come here complaining of seeing people who didn't exist."

"I know. It is all over the ticker tape, too." Cindy breathed slowly and deeply, emphasizing her shape even more than the miniskirt did on its own. "I just need to know that I am not crazy so I can do something about this and figure it out. I should be able to. I was a Chief of Science once, you know?"

Josh was starting to wonder if the captain was either unfit for duty or was she a flirt? She has a fine body, something she's not adverse to flaunting. And she was starting to distract him from his duties......"I can't find anything that indicates that you are crazy, captain. You're probably suffering from the same thing that is affecting us all."

"I am glad to hear that and not. As long as I am still fit for duty." Abruptly she sat up, placing herself closer to the Chief Medical Officer. "Do you need any help down here? I can get you some extra assistance." She smiled warmly at the Doctor.

Josh was startled by the "offer". Was it what he thought it was, or is she talking about something else? "Captain", he smiled back, "as delightful as that sounds, I don't think it would be proper in your current condition. I wouldn't feel comfortable with it, captain."

"Not comfortable with me ordering more people to assist the medical department?" she asked confused. "Why not?"

Arras took a small step back. "Sorry captain, I thought you were talking about something else. Right now, I think we are fully staffed here, but if that changes, I'll let you know, captain." He didn't know why, was something affecting his judgement, but he was attracted to the captain.

Completely innocently, Cindy asked, "Asking about what, Arras?" She laughed prettily and threw back her hair behind her shoulders. "And how many times do I have to ask you to call me Cindy, or at least Captain Cindy? I swear, one of these days I'm going to get the crew to come around to my thinking and not use all these ranks. We're a team!"

"I'm sorry, captain. I thought that you were...flirting with me. No excuse, but the last couple of days I have been examining people who said they saw what they called, ghosts." He took a breath. "Captain. You are my commanding officer...a ship's captain...everything they taught us said that you never call a superior officer by their given name. If we had gone through the academy together, then that's a different story. Then I would call you by your name, in private. But in front of others, I would call you "Captain"." He waited for her reply.

"Flirting with you?" Cindy replied with a pretty laugh. "Oh, my!" She patted the doctor on the shoulder and told him, "Don't worry about it! You're not the first who has thought that! That is probably the one thing that I do not understand about men, when you're nice, they think that you are flirting. It must be a missing gene or something." She then told the Doctor. "Now, look, Arras, call me Cindy, at least in private. Don't make me order it!" She gave him a wink.

"I think it has to do with body language, capt.....Cindy. A woman stands close to a man, or touches him or winks...the man will usually get the wrong idea." Arras responded. "You pass all the tests, you can stay in command."

"Ah, the double standard comes out. It is alright for you men to be close to a woman or touch us, but not the opposite and have it mean nothing," she commented. "Well, no worries. One day you will figure it out. Thank you, Arras. I must now meet with our Vulcan and see if we have a resolution to this mess."

"Understood, cap...Cindy." Arras waited for her to leave, and when she did, he headed back to his office.

"See, doesn't that feel better?" Cindy beamed a smile at Arras and then left to see her Chief Science Officer.
