Personal History | T'Kal was born in ShiKahr, Vulcan in 2216. Her father was an anthropologist in one of ShiKahr's academic institutions and her mother was a junior politician in the planetary government's legislature. Following her father's guidance, as a girl she studied cultures from around the Federation and became fascinated with that of Earth. Despite its unified government, Earth had resisted becoming a monoculture, priding itself on its diversity. She read books from all over the planet and consumed Earth media with gusto. She also became fascinated with Starfleet, whose mandate was increasing the Federation's knowledge and diversity, while offering humanitarian assistance where necessary. Her mother influenced her to use her knowledge and fascination for the betterment of others. The humanitarian angle intrigued her, and thought she could do great work as a nurse aboard a starship. T'Kal decided that, after her first Pon Farr, she would go to Earth, live among humans for a time while seeking an education in nursing, and then enlist in Starfleet. At age 22, when her first Pon Farr manifested, T'Kal was bonded with a man named Sten. She became pregnant with her first child, a daughter she named T'Mir. After T'Mir's birth, the family moved to Earth, where T'Kal enrolled in the National University of Singapore. Sten was a stay-at-home parent during these busy years. Four years later, she'd earned her Undergraduate degree in Nursing. Diploma in hand, she enlisted in Starfleet and took an eighteen-month course on the unique elements of being a nurse aboard a starship. She was stationed aboard USS Palatine (NCC-0511, Newton-class) with the rank of Able Crewman. Sten stayed on Earth with their daughter. At age 29, T'Kal took leave from Starfleet and returned to Vulcan, where she met Sten for their next Pon Farr. She got pregnant and later that year gave birth to her second child, a son named Torik. They returned to Earth, as Sten had developed roots there, and T'Kal decided to extend her furlough and earn a Graduate degree in Nursing from the University of Leeds. The married couple also decided that, as they had done their part to replenish the population, they would limit the number of children to two. When she returned to Starfleet, T'Kal was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class and posted to the Deneva Colony and then to USS Tesla (NCC-0601, Ohio-class). She loved assisting colonists, and was glad whenever the Tesla put into orbit of a colony so she could help the locals. In 2254, when her next Pon Farr hit, she did return to Earth to meet Sten (their lives depended on such a union), but followed through with their decision not to conceive. Their children, 14 and 7 years old at this point, had moved to Vulcan to attend boarding school. While on Earth, she managed to secure official certification with the Earth Medical Board was a Nurse-Practitioner, affording her more responsibilities. She was next posted to the Alpha Eridani II Colony, now a Petty Officer 1st Class. When Vulcan was destroyed by the madman Nero, Sten and T'Kal were still offworld. However, their children could not be evacuated in time. Devastated, T'Kal took leave and spent it with her husband. They helped their fellow survivors establish the New Vulcan colony. When their Pon Farrs hit again in 2261, they decided it was in their species' best interest to reproduce. However, despite being relatively young for a Vulcan, T'Kal's pregnancy was not without complication. Their daughter, Solan, was delivered surgically, and T'Kal's uterus suffered sufficient damage that she was told she could not have children again. After spending time raising her newest daughter, she felt the need to return to space. With Sten's reassurances and agreements, she returned to Starfleet, accepting a position under Dr. Jane Sinclair aboard USS Legacy (NCC-1800, Constitution-class). |
